Bat Out Of Hell

Photo by (but used without the permission) of Ron Jenkins, photographer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and can be clicked on to view a slightly larger version.
Now aside from the obvious bat to the jaw, what are a few things we can glean from this photograph?

I won't spoil it for anyone. Feel free to post your observations in the comments section.

From what I can tell, it appears as if the guy getting hit had no clue it was coming: his hands are in his lap, and his body isn't wincing at all; unlike everyone around him; even the little girl. Either way, I bet that hurt like a SOB the next day.

i didnt notice this b4. the guy in the blue shirt, arm out. looked like he was trying to catch the bat. either that or he was trying to get hit on purpose :)

Is the woman sitting next to him trying to take a picture?

Sorry, that's her cell phone. What happened to the poor guy anyway? Did he break his jaw with that? Ouch!

Believe it or not, but Batman only suffered a single broken rib from this event.

I like the guy in the black shirt behind Batman. The one who seems to know the bat is coming his way but won't hit him. He's one of the few people in the photo who's making no effort to protect himself.

The other person making little effort to protect themself is the baby girl two seats to the left of Batman. After all, it's Dad's job to protect her, and he's doing such a good job, too, isn't he? I hope his wife never sees this photo ;)

Oh, the hand sorta-kinda-in-a-way over her head isn't good enough? And, in the black shirt guys defense, the lady in green in front of him is doing a good enough job for the both of them.

In my opinion, the father's right hand is offering insufficient protection, and its positioning may even be coincidental. Put your body & arms in the same position as him, and you'll realize you're protecting nobody but yourself.

When we were in Australia last year my sister was carrying my daughter, who was maybe 8 months old at the time, when she tripped over a bag and fell. She made no attempt to protect herself but devoted everything to making sure my daughter was clutched safely to her chest as she twisted around to land on her back.

This meant the back of my sister's head struck the wooden floor giving her a mild concussion. As if that wasn't bad enough, to ensure she landed on her back she twisted her body so violently that she actually dislocated her own knee. So no, daddy is not doing enough to protect his daughter. She should have been his first and practically only thought, and his body should have been wrapped around hers.

I love that the little girl seems to be reaching out to the photo taker who is probably quite a ways away. I'm guessing she's gonna be famous someday--always wanting the limelight ;)

MAN that looks like it hurts.
