For starters, when has MTV been about politics? Is there a silent (invisible) P in there somewhere?
Two, if there's a good reason to vote for Obama, "To prove you're not a racist" is not it. How would you feel about someone who said, "Obama has done nothing which warrants him being a Presidential candidate, but I don't want people thinking I'm racist so I'm going to vote for him, anyway..."?
Three, George W. is a "retarded cowboy"? How long did it take Brand to come up with that drivel? Or did he just watch the last few VMAs and steal Chris Rock's gag? Perhaps he just watched reruns of The Tonight Show, or The Late Show. A "retarded cowboy"? Wow. He insulted retards, cowboys, and most of Texas, all in one hit. Actually, that's pretty good.
Four, I fail to see the humor in making fun of a group that, while working in an industry that surrounds them with promiscuity, still tries to promote a message that abstinence is A-OK. In a world where teen pregnancy is rampant to such an extent that (at least) 17 High School-aged girls made a pact to deliberately get themselves pregnant (thanks, Wolfgang ;), we have Pop Stars (who are role models, as much as real moms and dads might wish otherwise) who are trying to promote abstinence and say "It's okay to say No to sex", and this idiot is making fun of them. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
I will say this, though. Russell Brand has a lot going on up top; It's just a pity all of the activity seems to be occurring on the outside of his head.

The comedic pool seems to be in a slump from what I can tell. Chris Rock was a great choice for so many years because he had an abrasive, tell it like it is personality, and he is black, thus, immune from the race card.
I didn't watch the VMAs, but from the look of Russell Brand, he has all the appeal of carrot top to me. Not much. What MTV should have done was grabbed up Ralphie May, but then they would have a fat white guy with a plethora of racist/fat jokes on their hands. I'm guessing that wasn't their theme for the night.
I hate guilt trip politics. I have heard a few people say they don't like Obama for solid reasons, and just as many say they don't like him for "other reasons". The same percentage applies to the Mccainians I have talked to. Strangely enough, when I have brought up the fact that Palin is an inexperienced porkbarrel chugging poster VP, I have been accused of being a male pig. I think that many people just can't see through the BS, in comedy, or Politics.
What I'd love to see on the Ballot is an option to vote for "None Of The Above", and if that gathered the most votes then a second election would be held, in which None Of The Above candidates could participate.
But that would never happen for the same reasons as discussed in my previous post.
Yeah, he should have made fun of the Jonas Brother because they suck. Not becuase they are religious nutjobs.
Grumpy, that would have been totally acceptable in my books :D
Interesting. When I saw he was hosting the VMA's my first thought was, "Why?" I didn't watch the show and I'm kinda glad I didn't.
This guy kinda looks like a skinny Jack Black.
That makes me think he's not funny right there (because I don't think Jack Black is funny either).
Yup, Mr. Brand is an acquired taste and don't forget that outrageous = career-serving. That said, he seemed to get more of a appreciative reaction from the US media than his VMA appearance did over here in Blighty. He made me giggle but then I had not caught the Chris Rock stuff. Pity.
