It doesn't have to be this way, so don't be a sheep and don't allow the media to brainwash you. A vote for someone other than one of the two evils is not a wasted vote.
When it's not compulsory to vote you should be free to vote for the candidate of your choice, in fact you should be commended for taking an interest in the running of your country, not made to feel guilty for doing so.
The truth is if everyone who could legally vote did so, and if everyone voted for the candidate of their choice, not just for one of the two evils, then both evils would probably be more than a little shocked at the result.
Although I am the famous Wizard 101 Blogger, I don't claim to have a huge readership, but perhaps the following will inspire others to get the message out and together we can educate the masses.
You have a choice, and it's your own choice to make. Don't make a choice out of fear, don't feel you have to vote for one of the two evils. Vote for the candidate you think actually has the knowledge and experience to run the country.
Because they already get enough air time I'm not going to name either of the two evils here (or even link to their pages), instead, here are the people the two evils would probably much rather you didn't know about.
The Libertarian Party candidate, Congressman Bob Barr.
The Constitution Party candidate, Pastor Chuck Baldwin.
The Green Party candidate, former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
Independent candidate Ralph Nader.
Of particular note is that Cynthia McKinney is not just a woman, but an African-American woman! Now why the hell isn't she getting more press time?
Because the media want you to vote for one of the two evils, so they promote them and forsake everyone else.
Don't let the wolf lead you astray, or the shepherd pull the wool over your eyes.
Vote (or don't vote) for the candidate of your choice. Now if your choice is one of the two evils, good for you, but be true to yourself, make sure it's your choice, not that of the media.

It's not only not a waste to vote for one of the non-evils, but I would say it is throwing away your vote if you vote for one of the twin evils. If you vote for either of them, you are telling the big dogs, that you don't care, and that they can continue with the circus they have been conducting for decades. You've spat in the face of the founding fathers and given away your right to representation, if you vote for the twin evils. A vote for the twin evils is a vote for dismissal of the revolutionary war and the lives spent to give you freedom.
Interesting, Cap'n. I was thinking of this just this morning.
If a voter can, with honest research and full confidence, vote for one of the "evils" that the media has given us for a choice, I will disagree with them, but it's their call to make.
If, however, with honest research and full confidence, a voter cannot choose either of the "anointed" choices without running afoul of their conscience, I'd go so far as to say that it is their civic duty and moral obligation to vote for someone else who they can support.
Anything less than voting honestly, from a position of knowledge, is abdicating your right and responsibility to vote, and handing the country to special interests.
Choosing the lesser of evils is still choosing evil. Unless you have a gun to your head and are being forced to choose one of the two, there are always other choices.
I made a post on my blog covering some of these ideas under my "Libertarian" post, although it is heavily Canadian influenced. I just chuckle at the fact Libertarians participate in the system at all, if they are in the truest sense a "Libertarian".
Side note, I did have 10 people in ridings I was a scrutineer for vote for the "Communist" party in the last Canadian election. I wish EVERY vote for a non mainstream party was counted as a protest vote. The vote in themselves feel like a waste - people chuckle about it and think that they are as none of the fringe candidates have much of a legitimate chance to win. I think if you add up all the spoiled/non mainstream party votes you could convey a strong message to the mainstream parties - "you just don't get it."
True, Chris. Of course, that would also depend on people being willing to actually use their vote for such protest (rather than vote to pick the winner), and for the powers that be to listen to it. Tangentially, I tend to think that the 40% or so of people who don't vote are already sending such a message. *shrug*
I think the 'powers that be' prefer to look at those 40% of non voters as 'happy with either candidate'. =)
If those 40% did a protest vote instead of not vote, it sends a much, much stronger and clear message.
1)The protest vote would have more aggregate votes than either candidate.
2)More importantly, it would show politicians that those people will actually get off the couch AND VOTE. Which means, they can win elections if they can capture their votes. Which means, they would actually take the time to bother to figure out what those voters want from government, which (should) mean they would design their campaign based off of those needs, which means a much more inclusive government.
In theory.
Politicians don't create their platform on what they think is best for the country. They create it on what will help them win. If the Republicans really thought gay rights votes would represent more votes than the staunch religious, we would have RuPaul as the VP candidate instead of Sarah Pallin.
True enough. I guess that's why the people have to "check and balance" that impulse by voting for those who they think will be the best for the country, rather than who they "think can win", who they would have a beer with, or who "looks more presidential".

Right.
While I'm at it, I want a pony.
A pink one, midget sized, for my two year old daughter. And a PS3. Think I can get that on welfare?
I make it a practice to check out all the candidates when I get ready to vote. This time was no different and I took the time to research the various parties and who was running in Ohio. In the end, I still voted for the lesser of all the evils I had a choice from. I am very disappointed in the selection of candidates this time around.
